Lawn Tips

MOWING & MOWER CARE
Cut the lawn only once a week because the grass is growing vigorously now.
It is not necessary to pick up clippings every week, leave the catcher off once in a while.
Keep your mower set at the same height you began with in the spring.
Never be tempted to lower your mower, no matter how cool the weather sometimes get during July and August.
Grass develops a balance between the leaves and root systems, a sudden change in this balance causes severe shock to the plant.
However, if your lawn is in poor shape and does not look good, you can raise the mower slightly, such as half an inch.
Keep the mower blades sharp.

PROPER WATERING
After a long spell without rain, begin watering your lawn.
In Fort Wayne and surrounding area, water your lawn approximately one inch per week.
If you are curious to know how much water you are using, make a simple test.
Set a coffee can just a few feet away from the sprinkler and put another one near the end of the spray.
Turn on the sprinkler and water for one hour, the average height of the water in the coffee cans will indicate how much water has gone into the soil for one hour.
This will tell you how long to water to apply one inch per week.
Remember to overlap when you water, so that your whole lawn gets watered completely.
Watering is permissible at any time, day or night.
Don't forget to water your trees and shrubbery during drought conditions.

LAWN FERTILIZATION
Watered turf requires more fertilizer, because large quantities of nutrients are lost from the soil by leaching.
Leaching is where the turf nutrients are carried downward in the soil with water and pass the root zone.
Therefore the plant cannot take in the nutrients.
So apply one (1) application of fertilizer to your lawn after July 4th.
This will replace the nutrients that were lost from leaching.
Remember to read the directions on the back of the bag.

WEED CONTROL
If you have a few lingering weeds in your lawn, spot treat with a post-emergence weed killer, either with liquid or granular weed killer.
Some fertilizers contain a post-emergence weed killer, look for them at your local garden shop.
Again read the directions!!
